Ngil masks were central to the Ngil society, a male secret association within Fang communities historically responsible for maintaining justice and social order. The name "Ngil" means "gorilla," and some features, like arched eyebrows and a broad forehead, may be inspired by gorillas.

Fang Ngil masks are characterized by their elongated, oval shape, prominent forehead, deeply set eyes, and a long, fine nose. They are typically coated with white kaolin clay, symbolizing purity, ancestral spirits, and a connection to the spiritual realm.

These masks were worn during initiations of new members into the Ngil society and for social policing, including identifying and punishing wrongdoers. Their appearance, often at night and by torchlight, was intended to evoke a sense of awe and fear, reflecting the mask's powerful role in upholding customary law / fighting witchcraft
