Feathered headdresses, also known as war bonnets, are most strongly associated with the Great Plains tribes of North America. The use of these headdresses has historical roots, with European settlers first observing them among groups like the Lakota Sioux in the 1600s.
Traditionally, war bonnets were worn by respected male leaders, chiefs, and warriorsfrom tribes such as the Cheyenne, Sioux, and Crow. They were symbols of great spiritual and political importance, with each feather earned through acts of bravery, service, or other achievements. The headdresses were primarily worn for ceremonial occasions and were not typically used during active combat.

This appears to be one of the trading posts items during the arts and crafts period. It is over 100 years old. Beautiful Native American Woman.
Please see photos for size of portrait and frame. Fantastic condition for the it’s age.
