This magnificent piece of advertising for Michael's, Stern & Co. Clothing of Rochester is in excellent condition.
There is no forseeable damage to the piece aside from there being some extremly fine surface scratches on the lacquer finish. To the right side appears to be damage but that is actually an impurity in the wood veneer beneath the finish.
This is a rare store piece that assuradly sat atop a counter as display advertising. The mascot is embossed to where it is slightly raised from the surface. If you are a collector of advertising then this piece would make an excellent addition to your collection.
Michaels, Stern, and Co. was a Rochester-based manufacturer of men's tailored suits and apparel. The company was founded in 1849 by Henry Michaels (1822–1894). After several name changes and changes in partnership, the company became known as Michaels-Stern & Co. when Henry Michael's son-in-law Morley A. Stern joined as a partner in 1877. The company was liquidated in 1977.
